If you want to hear the signals that you have recorded through higher quality than the D to A conversion built into your computer's sound card then you'll want to have external (as in not-inside-your-computer) D to A conversion as well. If you're sure you don't need preamps, and you're sure you just need a way to get your analog signals into a computer then at the very least you need A to D converters and an audio interface. That is why the terminology can be confusing. Many home studio owners use combination units that include preamps and/or analog line level inputs, A to D and D to A conversion, as well as an audio interface (and sometimes even monitoring controller) all in one box that goes by the name of an audio interface.

Many audio interfaces have A to D and/or D to A converters. If you want to work with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) like ProTools, Cubase, Logic or others you will need an audio interface. USB3 is popular now, as well as the widely adopted Dante protocol that uses Ethernet cables and routers.Īn Analog to Digital converter (A to D, or AD converter) is a hardware device that takes analog signals and converts them to the zeros and ones (digital signals) that are used in the digital domain.Ī Digital to Analog converter (D to A, or DA converter) is a hardware device that takes digital signals and converts them to analog signals that are used in the analog domain.Ī digital audio interface, or just an audio interface is a device that takes digital signals and routes them to and from your computer. As a commonly used technology in the audio recording world it is falling out of favor.

It takes zeros and ones (digital signals) and sends them between hardware devices via Firewire cables connected to Firewire ports on those devices. That being said I don't really know the difference in lingo when it comes to firewire interfaces and ad/da converters and the differences between them.Ĭan someone help me understand the difference or what the right term is for what I need and am looking for?įirewire is a digital information transfer protocol. So something with 16 TRS 1/4" inputs, 16 track thunderbolt output, with stereo monitor mix output as well is all I need. I also use the motu as my master stereo output going to my studio monitor speakers. I just want a high quality analog to digital mutlitrack conversion to feed into Logic. It looks like 16 track versions are starting to come around which would be great for me going forward since I require the ability to record up to 16 tracks simultaneously.īut I really don't need the preamps, compression, eq, and all the bells and whistles that the motu's have. I need the Long ago I purchased 2 Motu 828 mkII and linked them together to be my converter / firewire interface.

That being said I have 16 individual varying mic preamps that go to my 16 track tape machine and I need to get that analog signal digital converted into 16 tracks for Logic Pro X on my computer. My recording set up is more of a live set up since my music is based more on live collaboration. I've been out of the loop for a while on recording gear and am trying to figure out what I'm looking for gear wise.
